Getting Too Big?

by Vladi
I don't know about you but I've read in quite a few training related books that in order to avoid “getting too big” you should stick to low rep work and lots of rest between sets. Of course all of this doesn't make any sense.

Look, nobody ever gets too big unless steroids, hormones...etc are used. But even if “sport technology drugs” are part of the regimen nobody gets too big without wanting it. I'm dead serious. The chance of waking up and having arms 4-inches bigger than your original goal is part of the most ridiculous things you may expect. It just doesn't happen. Actually the chance of it happening is the same as waking up and being the best sprinter in the world. It just doesn't happen that way. That's why I've always been amazed how people can complain of getting “too big”. Nobody gets that big unless he wants to.

Nobody.

"Hm...bro...but then why many coaches advise you to perform lower rep work in order to avoid getting bigger?"

Some athletes have weight classes restrictions and gaining mass can be a problem. But honestly gaining mass (muscle) is so hard to do. It's difficult to gain 10 pounds a year after your first 1-2 years of training. More on this in the article Nutritional Reality by Mike Mentzer. In other words you should not fear getting bigger than you want because it won't happen anyway.
